In 2003 Stanley Chumfwa won the South African Open chess tournament, held in Centurion.
November 2005 in Lusaka (Zambia) the African Chess Championship was played. The winner was Ahmed Adly with 7 pts out of 9 games, while Chumfwa ended third with 6.5 pts. Thereby he qualified himself to enter the FIDE Chess World Cup 2005 tournament.〔(''Stanley Chumfwa qualifies for FIDE World Cup!'' ) The Chess Drum, Nov. 2005〕 In this knockout tournament, 128 participants, Chumfwa was in the first round beaten by Etienne Bacrot, who would later on finish at the third place.
